Removing the Volume/Media Controls Overlay On Chrome

tips Aug 06, 2019

Thanks to our free Pluralsight account, I watch a lot of courses at work. But whenever I pause the video to do something else, an annoying black box keeps popping up.

It takes up so much space and the constant fade in - fade out is super distracting. Not to mention how it pretty much covers the top left corner of my screen!

Here's how to remove it:

  1. In Chrome, type about://flags in the address bar to open the Flags screen.
  2. Type "hardware media key handling" in the search box.
  3. Choose Disabled in the drop-down box for the Hardware Media Key Handling item.
  4. Click Relaunch Now to restart Chrome.

Now the only pesky thing left is the volume bar. I haven't been able to find a solution for removing this, however. If you come across the answer, do let me know!
